PetroVietnam Fertilizer and Chemicals Corporation (PVFCCo) is striving to reach a urea fertilizer output of over 1.7 million tons a year within the next three years to meet 100% of local demand, said a representative of PVFCCo.

Tu Cuong, Deputy General Director of PVFCCo, told Thursday (24 Sep 2009) that Phu My Nitrogenous Fertilizer Plant (Dam Phu My) in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province is expected to produce 750,000 tons of nitrogenous fertilizer this year to meet 40% of the domestic demand. Another urea plant with higher output will also be up and running in three years’ time, he said.

“PVFCCo is hastening construction of the Ca Mau Nitrogenous Fertilizer Plant (Dam Ca Mau) in the delta province of Ca Mau so that this second nitrogenous fertilizer plant of PVFCCo can start production in 2012 with an annual output of 800,000 tons,” he said.

Cuong noted that present consumption of high-quality nitrogenous fertilizer in Vietnam was some 1.7 million tons. When Dam Ca Mau starts operating, PVFCCo hopes to meet 100% of the demand for nitrogenous fertilizer.

According to Cuong, Dam Phu My is preparing a project to collect carbon dioxide (CO2) from the smoke discharged from its fertilizer plant to use as raw material for the production of fertilizer that will add an extra 60,000 tons to its total output. This project is expected to be operational from early 2011.

PVFCCo on Thursday also marked the fifth anniversary of Dam Phu My in Phu My 1 Industrial Park in Ba Ria-Vung Tau’s Tan Thanh District.

According to PVFCCo, in five years Dam Phu My has produced over 3.5 million tons of urea, and achieved a total turnover of VND22 trillion and a pre-tax profit of VND6 trillion.
