The Prime Minister has approved in principle on the hiring of foreign organisations to be the experts providing assistance in the process of working out a detailed plan for the Long Thanh International Airport project in the southern province of Dong Nai. This is according to a new document issued on August 4 by the Governmental Office.
Accordingly, the investors are responsible to negotiate and decide on the organizations and experts to give consultancy during the process.
The Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai province, 40 kilometres south east of Ho Chi Minh City, is designed to be a global transit destination in the Southeast Asian region.
The airport will need some US$8 billion in investment and cover 5,000 hectares, designed to handle 5 million pieces of cargo and 100 million passengers per year, 10 times bigger than Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.
The project is also aimed at alleviating passenger loads at Tan Son Nhat Airport, as it is impossible to expand the airport due to space limitations.
The airport is scheduled to open between 2010 and 2015 with four runways able to receive Airbus 380s, and have several terminals and commercial sections.
