Vietnam Renewable Energy Joint Stock Company (REVN) on Wednesday started operating 20 turbines of its wind power plant with a capacity of 30MW in Binh Thuan Province’s Tuy Phong District, said the provincial Department of Industry and Trade.

Ho Son Tung, deputy director of the department, told the Daily on Wednesday that this was the first wind power project to be connected to national power grid, and the project’s investment in the first phase was around US$70 million.

According to Tung, REVN is under preparation to start the second phase construction of the project with an additional capacity of 90MW. Since the trial operation in September, 2009, the first 20 wind turbines of the project have provided 90 million kWh for the national grid, he said.

However, REVN is temporarily offered only six U.S. cents for each kWh of wind power by Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) while the price set by the Government last year was 7.8 cents, he added.

Binh Thuan Province has received registration of 16 wind power projects with a total capacity of 1,350MW.

According to the General Department of Energy under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Binh Thuan has finished a master plan of wind power development for the 2010-2015 period and a vision towards 2020, and the potential capacity of wind power in the province can amount to over 5,000MW.
