Till April 2012, HCM City had 243 markets, down six markets against 2009; including 17 markets under the category 1, 48 others for category 2 and 178 of category 3, according to HCM City Department of Industry and Trade.

Of which, the majority of markets have been built from the state budget, five markets were built by cooperatives and nine others were built by enterprises and private firms. Particularly, three wholesale markets are being managed by the city and 240 markets are being run by districts.

Currently, only 34.9 percent of markets in the city have better infrastructure and the rest are in a state of deterioration. As planned, by 2015, the city will have 248 markets, of which, the city will develop additional five markets and made clearance and relocation for 37 markets.

On the supermarket system, till April 2012, the city had 163 supermarkets, up 71 supermarkets against 2009. By 2015, the city will develop 240 supermarkets, up 77 compared to the current volume.

Regarding the trade centre system, as of April 2012, the city had 24 centres, down 3 from 2009. By 2015, the city will have 122 shopping centres, up 98 new centres. In addition, the city will also develop 360 convenience stores of trade marks such as Co.opfood, Satrafood, Foodcomart, Vissan, G7Mart, Minimart and Citimart.
