In an effort to ease the severe shortage of parking areas in HCMC, local authorities have recommended 18 locations for developing underground and high-rise parking lots, said an official of the city’s Department of Transport.

The planned sites are located in districts 5, 10, 11, Tan Binh and Binh Thanh, including Le Thi Rieng Park and Phu Tho Indoor Stadium, the official told the Daily after the meeting with the city’s leaders and related agencies on Monday.

HCMC Vice Chairman Nguyen Huu Tin at the meeting asked the transport department and the HCMC Department of Planning and Architecture to review the 18 locations and select some locations to call for investors soon, with an aim to have at least one project kicked off within the year.

Now the city has four underground parking projects that have been given the nod from local relevant authorities. These parking lots are in Le Van Tam Park, Trong Dong Stage, Hoa Lu Stadium and Tao Dan Cultural Park.

However, only the project in Le Van Tam Park is set to get off the ground at the end of this year while the construction schedules of the remainder are still unknown.

At the meeting, the city government directed the department to study technology and seek investors to develop automatic parking lots for two-wheeled vehicles in the locality. Besides, the department is also requested to encourage developers to increase the area of parking spaces for housing projects.
