Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) and The Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) recently had a meeting with some Southern provinces about the developing plans of Bac – Nam (the North – the South railways in September 2012 in HCM City.

Jica recommended Vietnam to construct in advance 2 high speed railways projects which are Hanoi – Vinh (300 kilometres) and HCM City – Nha Trang (370 kilometres) with the maximum speed of 300km/hour and total investment of $21.4 billion.

Accordingly, by 2013 its feasibility study will be accomplished and submitted to the National Assembly.
With the current railway system, Jica researching delegation proposes to improve it in the direction of raising the number of trains (from 32 to 50 trains) and reducing the running time from Hanoi to HCM City and vice versa (from 28 hours down to 25.4 hours). The cost to carry out this project is about $1.8 billion.
