The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade said the ceremony for receiving the status of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for Phu Quoc fish sauce took place on July 15, 2013 in Belgium.

The fish sauce, which officially received PDO recognition in 2012, has passed all EU food safety regulations.

The EU certification for Phu Quoc fish sauce is a remarkable milestone in the development of our nation’s branding in the EU, which is deployed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade with the cooperation and support of the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam (NOIP), the Provincial People’s Committee of Kien Giang, and the Vietnamese Trade Office and Embassy in Belgium and the sponsorship of the European Trade Policy and Investment Support Project (EU-MUTRAP). The PDO certification has raised the prestige of Phu Quoc fish sauce, facilitate the prevention against faked goods in the EU and promote its sales in Vietnam and in the world.

This is the first Vietnamese product to be certified DPO in all 28 EU nations. In the coming time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to work with EU-MUTRAP Project to support business associations/industries to prepare documents for geographical indication (GI) protection for some famous agricultural products like Buon Ma Thuot coffee, Shan Tuyet tea and Hoa Loc sweet mango.
