INTRODUCTION
  Overview

Area: 2.520,6 km2

Population: 856.250 (2009)

BEN TRE, located at the end-stream of Mekong River, is one of the 13 provinces that make up the Mekong Delta. It shares its border with Tien Giang in the north, Vinh Long in the west and south - west, and Tra Vinh in the south. It has 60km seashore. The four main rivers are Tien Giang, Ba Lai, Ham Luong, and Co Chien. They create Bao, Minh, and An Hoa islets.The topography is flat with sand dunes and fields. Though rivers surrounding the province, water transportation is very available.

 

  Transportation

The province's stand in transportation development is to base on the existent systems of the 4 main rivers and main roads such as National Highways (NH) 60 and 57, Provincial Roads (PR) 883, 884, 885, 887, and 888.

Construction on the Rach Mieu Bridge, which links Bến Tre to its northern neighbour, Tiền Giang province, was started in 2002. The bridge was finished and opened for traffic on 19 January 2009. Before that time, Bến Tre was only accessible to automobiles via ferry.

River and Sea transportation systems are going on to base mostly on existing strengths, in combination with more investments in modern technological facilities for high-end economic yields. In the next 10 years, Ben Tre province is planning to construct 7 or 8 more ferries. These are considered new gateways that are very important to the province's future development. Then an inland port project is under planning to be built in Phu Tuc Commune on the left bank of My Tho River, which may harbour 3,000-tonne to 3,500-tonne ships, with a discharge capacity of up to 1.2 million tonnes of goods per year.

  Economic Situation

Economic growth rate in 2011 was estimated at 8.74%, the value of agricultural production up 7.5%, industrial production up 18.3%, service up 8.7%.

The main goal in 2012 is to continue to control inflation, maintain growth at reasonable levels, improve quality, efficiency and competitiveness of the economy, shifting the economic structure, labor structure towards sustainable implementation of the policies of social security, stability and improve people's lives.

In 2012 Ben Tre strive to implement the indicators: economic growth (GDP) in 2012 increased 10%, of which: agriculture, forestry and aquatic products increased by 5.9% and the construction industry and construction increased 17.95% and the 10.3% service.
