Date: 6/7/2016 10:15:04 AM
The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho has kicked off work on the Can Tho Urban Development and Resilience Project worth over US$322 million, which is mostly sourced from the World Bank (WB).

Huynh Thanh Su, director of Can Tho’s official development assistance (ODA) project management unit, said the project would help the city become greener and cleaner when it is complete in 2021. Can Tho’s resilience to floods and consequences of rapid urbanization can be increased thanks to the project.

The project will also support integrated climate resilient management and development in Can Tho, a social and economic hub of the Mekong Delta, he said.

Of US$322 million, the WB will lend over US$250 million and Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) will grant US$10 million. The rest will come from the city’s budget.

The project has three components with one focusing on flood risk management and environmental sanitation, and building an embankment along the Can Tho River, drainage culverts under bridges, detention basins, reservoirs, water pumping stations and improvements of drainage and canal.

The second component will develop an urban corridor by constructing Quang Trung Bridge over the Can Tho River, Tran Hoang Na Road and Bridge, side roads from Tran Hoang Na to IC3 intersection, a road link between Cach Mang Thang Tam (National Highway No. 91) and Provincial Road 918, infrastructure in the resettlement site in Ninh Kieu District’s An Binh Ward, a traffic monitoring system and other facilities.

The last component will enhance the capacity of Can Tho City’s authorities to manage disaster risks by developing a geospatial database for improved management and a risk information system.
