The country’s longest road will run 3,127km along the coast from Nui Do port in the northern province of Quang Ninh to the Xa Xia Border Gate in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Kien Giang.

A term-end report submitted to the Ministry of Transport by the Viet Nam Road Department says 1,800km of this road will be formed by sections of existing provincial roads and national highways along coastal areas, accounting for 59.2% of the total length.

Another 481km, or 16.4% of the total have been zoned by provinces, while the remaining 741 km of the coastal road will be new road sections built under a plan that will be submitted for the Prime Minister’s approval. The coastal road, which will be used only for domestic travel purposes, will have an estimated investment capital of VND27.61 trillion US$1.6 billion), according to the Transport Engineering Design Inc. (TEDI), main consultant for the road zoning plan.

Construction of the coastal road’s first phase, which will last until 2020, will focus on building and upgrading a total of 787km of road sections in key economic regions and 15 coastal economic zones.

The first phase is estimated to cost about VND14.48 trillion ($850 million). The second phase, which will be implemented after 2020, will build and upgrade 1,156km of road in the remaining sections.
