Moon cakes with liquor, worth millions dong, have appeared on the market. They are called ‘five star moon cakes’ because they are luxuries to be given as gifts and not eating.

Today the mid-autumn festival is not just the children’s Tet, it has also become the occasion when adults offer gifts to partners and bosses to “win their hearts.” Savvy moon cake producers, who understand such demands, have come up with the super-expensive five star moon cakes.

Luxury cakes, luxury prices

Some moon cake producers have added liquor into boxes of moon cakes, which is considered a wise move, since the producers can sell both cakes and liquor at the same time and at high prices. Some producers are selling sets of teapots together with the cakes.

The super deluxe moon cakes now available on the market are made by the Hilton Hanoi Opera hotel. The most expensive is the lacquer box of four big cakes, a bottle of Hennessy XO 350ml and a teapot set worth 2.8 million dong. A similar product, which has Gold Label 350ml instead of Hennessy, is selling at 1.9 million dong.

With “‘softer prices,” Long Dinh brand moon cakes are selling at 1.24-1.46 million dong per box, which includes two big cakes, six smaller ones and a bottle of liquor.

The high incomer earners’ market has also attracted moon cake producers like Kinh Do, Bibica and Huu Nghi, all known for their well-liked products. They are offering festival cakes for 350,000 and 800,000 dong per box. Meanwhile, the more popular products of Kinh Do have the prices of 200-300,000.

Prominent hotels in Hanoi like Daewoo, Sofitel Plaza and Hanoi Hotel have also launched products with sky high prices. Hanoi Hotel, for example, has products priced at 600,000-900,000. Daewoo Hanoi has also introduced special festival products for up to one million dong.

In HCM City, boxes of moon cakes are not associated with liquor, but they also have different kinds of tea and are also expensive.

Omni Saigon Hotel, for example, is selling cakes priced at 220-385,000 dong per box, while the cakes of Renaissance Riverside Saigon are priced at 320,000 dong per box

Just for the bosses

Despite the economic downturn and lower incomes, million dong moon cakes are selling well. Buyers do not purchase them for family use, but as gifts to their superiors, assuming that big bosses deserve expensive moon cakes.

The saleswoman of Hilton Hanoi Opera told VnMedia reporters that the hotel can sell 5-7 boxes of the special cakes daily and also several hundreds of boxes of cakes valued at 800,000-1.9 million dong.

When asked about the buyers, she said most purchased the special cakes as gifts. Some big companies and banks purchased cakes to give to partners and their staff.

Reporters met up with Hong Hanh, the officer of a large foreign bank, at the Long Dinh moon cake sales stand and told them that she purchased the 1.46 million dong cakes to offer as presents. “I will purchase the products worth 200,000 dong for my family’s use. Eating deluxe cakes is really a waste of money,” she remarked.
