The Petrovietnam Exploration and Production Corporation (PVEP), a subsidiary of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) and the Total E&P Vietnam Oil and Gas Company have started to survey oil in Dong Thap province.
PVEP’s engineer Tran Dai Thang said that PVEP and Total E&P Vietnam begin teir geological surveys to explore oil and gas in the Mekong Delta. “Research works show that the Mekong Delta has potential for oil and gas reserves,” Thang said.
Engineers working in Dong Thap say they use 2D methodology to discover the geological structure to define areas which may have oil and gas. “The survey will last 3-5 years and until then we will not know whether this region has oil and gas or not,” Thang said. Before the survey, PVEP and Total E&P Vietnam committed to protect the environment during surveys.
A representative from PVEP said that the survey will be conducted in four blocks in Tra Vinh, Soc Trang Ben Tre, Long An, Dong Thap, Tien Giang, An Giang, Can Tho and the Ca Mau peninsula.
