Vietnam will start collecting road maintenance fees from local vehicles June 1, Prime Minister’s latest decision said last Thursday.

Vietnam will start collecting road maintenance fees from local vehicles June 1, VnExpress quoted the Prime Minister’s latest decision as saying Thursday.

In a recent decree on the Road Maintenance Funds, the PM said the fees will be collected every year, but did not say how much the fees would be, the newswire reported.

According to the decree, part of the maintenance funds will also come from the state budget, it said.

In an earlier proposal submitted to the PM last October, the Ministry of Transport suggested collecting the fees by either asking vehicle owners to pay them monthly or annually, or asking car users to pay more when buying gasoline and diesel. Under the first plan, the ministry asked car owners to pay between VND180,000 and 1.4 million (US$8.6-67) a month, while motorbike owners will pay between VND80,000 and VND150,000 ($3.8-7.2) per year.

If applied, the first plan will help collect some VND6 trillion ($288.3 trillion) per year, the ministry said. Meanwhile, the second plan aimed to collect a total of over VND9 trillion ($432.4 million) annually.
