Speaking at the seminar, Mr. Bui Xuan Cuong - Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City - said that up to now, the seaport of Ho Chi Minh City has been invested and built in accordance with the plan. The ports were built synchronously and efficiently exploited, making great contributions to the socio-economic development of the city and the southern region. In particular, Cat Lai Newport with an average throughput of goods through the port of more than 5 million teus/year, is considered as one of the TOP 22 largest seaports in the world.

According to Mr. Bui Xuan Cuong, Can Gio district has a geographical position adjacent to the East Sea, between two large estuaries, the Soai Rap and Long Tau rivers, and adjacent to the Thi Vai river. These are important maritime routes of group 4 seaports, converging enough conditions to develop national gateway seaports and international transshipment.

The Resolution of the Politburo and the National Assembly has identified the task of developing Ho Chi Minh City by 2030, with a vision to 2045, it is necessary to build a modern and synchronous infrastructure to promote investment in the Can Gio international transshipment port; research to exploit potentials and advantages to develop Can Gio area to become a new growth engine for Ho Chi Minh City.

Presenting the project, Mr. Pham Anh Tuan - General Director of Port Engineering and Design Consulting Joint Stock Company (Porcoast) - said that the project has a total length of river surface of about 7.2 km, of which 6.8 km is the mother wharf (main wharf) and about 1.9 km is the barge berth.

The port is designed to accommodate mother ships with a size of up to 250,000 tons (equivalent to a carrying capacity of 24,000 teus). The total harbor area is about 571 hectares and the water surface area is about 477.63 hectares with a capacity of about 16.9 million teus.

“The total investment for the project is more than 5 billion USD (equivalent to 128,000 billion VND) and is divided into 7 phases. In which, the first phase is expected to be put into operation in 2027 and complete the investment in 2045", Mr. Pham Anh Tuan informed.

According to Dr. Tran Du Lich - economic expert, the proposed location of Can Gio port is very convenient, moreover this time the investor is a leading shipping company. This is an opportunity that Ho Chi Minh City must implement as quickly as possible so as not to miss the opportunity.
